BED 2 SHINGLE PIONEER COMMUNITIES

As the pioneer plants thrive, grow and then eventually die and decay in the shingle, humus is formed as plant nutrition. Small plant communities can take root in more sheltered places and also provide each other with shelter. These plants form more humus and the communities can grow larger and more diverse.

Tough plants like Rock samphire, Sea-lavender, Thrifts, Sea-holly and low-lying plants like Sea-mayweed can take root and survive.
