BED 6 - NATIVE PLANTS FOR BIODIVERSITY
The South Downs chalk grassland is the most biodiverse grassland in the British Isles. In I sq meter of grassland you can find 30-40 different species of plants! These attract large numbers of different insects, bees and butterflies, birds and wildlife forming complex food webs.
These native plants, often perennials and self-seeders:
- have flowers which attract pollinator insects, especially bees
- are food for insects/caterpillars, especially butterflies
- are food for birds as seeds, nuts and berries
- provide shelter for small mammals
